Virtual Team-building is skyrocketing! Six years ago, 45 million employees worked remotely at least once a week. In 2010, the virtual workforce will hit 100 million. But, perhaps more important than the numbers, are the strong impact effective virtual teams are having on their companies.
As the World we know becomes a Smaller Place….
Teams are more and more dispersed and yet required to communicate just as they did when they were side by side or face to face. If you are located over 90 feet from a team mate, then you are dispersed. We all have challenges that need to be addressed, such as: doing more with less, having faster turnaround in all that we do, cost cutting and bring more value to our customers.
According to Dr. Tom Allen, author of “Managing the Flow of Technology,” people are not likely to communicate or collaborate very often if they are more than 50 feet apart.
This tells us that small levels of dispersion can substantially affect team. In fact those teams who were situated fairly close together performed worse than teams who were more geographically spread out. The only teams that fared worse were those who had high levels of intercultural diversity and who spanned many time zones.
The reason for this is team members who are in the same building but separate floors, did not consider themselves as being virtual so they did not make the effort to walk over to someone’s desk or to climb a set of stairs to connect with someone, or to create social and task processes which is a key element for virtual team success
How then, do we foster communication and collaboration when people are geographically dispersed?
